Welcome to our Fuel Guide

With more and more people coming back to the Warmth of a real fire, our aims are:

  • Supply you with the most suitable fuel for your appliance.
  • Supply the best quality Fuels.
  • Offer fair pricing.
  • Educate customers on Safety requirements when using Solid Fuels.
  • Deliver the Best Service.

We get lots of questions about which types of fuels are best suited to certain fires, so we've put together this page to help as a guide.

Further down we have also added some information you may find useful including some important Safety guidance.

Please contact us if there's anything else you'd like to know before or after making a purchase, we are always happy to help. One of our employees (now part time!) is a qualified Fuel Technologist who has been has been in the coal trade for over 50 years, so you can be sure of expert advice.

Multi Fuel Stoves - Coal
.
There are now a vast range of Multi fuel stoves available on the market. Some are supplied ready for burning both coal & logs, others need a Multi Fuel kit fitted (usually a simple, removable grate) installed before burning coal.

All of our Coals listed under Smokeless Fuels are suitable for this type of appliance, and will help prevent your glass from blackening and your chimney sooting up.

Multiheat Briquettes burn particularly well on these appliances.

Our Welsh Dry Steam Coal also burns very well on these appliances, however be aware that it is not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas.

Experience has shown that which type of coal can vary between stove types.

For Multi Fuel stoves with a heat output of less than 6kw we recommend:

For Larger Multi Fuel stoves, in addition to the products listed for the smaller stoves, you may find the following more suitable :

Multi Fuel Stoves - Logs
We recommend Certainly Wood Kiln Dried Logs for your Multi Fuel stove - if you haven’t tried them you’ll be amazed at the increased heat output generated. This is due to the low moisture content (as low as 15%) you will also find that you can mix these with traditional seasoned logs to help keep your costs down

i

Traditional glass front Room Heater/Boiler - E.g. Parkray, Rayburn, Trianco

All of our Coals listed under Smokeless Fuels are suitable for this type of appliance and will help prevent your glass from blackening and your chimney sooting up.

Again, Welsh Dry Steam Coal also burns very well on these appliances, however be aware that it is not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas.

We do NOT recommend burning Logs on this type of appliance.

We Recommend:

i

Open Fires - Coal

.

Nothing beats an Open Fire on a cold evening and we have a great range of fuels suitable for this type.

Our Premium House Coal gives great heat output and a large flame - simply the best!

Be aware that House Coal is not Authorised for use in Smoke control areas.

We also have some smokeless fuels suitable for open fries.

We Recommend:

Open Fires - Logs

We recommend Certainly Wood Seasoned Logs for your Open Fire - they have a slightly higher moisture content than the Kiln Dried Logs and you’ll find that you get great heat and a longer burn from these logs.

However, if it is maximum heat output you are after, Certainly Wood Kiln Dried Logs are the choice. Be aware you will have limited air control on an Open Fire these will burn more quickly.

i

Solid Fuel cooker such as AGA, Rayburn

.

All of our Coals listed under Smokeless Fuels are suitable for this type of appliance and will help prevent your chimney sooting up.

We do NOT recommend burning Logs on this type of appliance.

We Recommend:

i

Gravity feed Boilers such as Trianco

.

Generally, there are only 2 x types of Coal suitable for this type of boiler.

Which one depends on the size of plate you have fitted. Please check this before ordering.

We Recommend:

Safety
Carbon Monoxide
.
We strongly recommend that you have a Carbon Monoxide alarm fitted if you burn Solid Fuels. Don’t place it too near to your appliance - it should be in a place where it will wake you up if asleep.
Chimney Sweeping
To ensure Safety and Maximum performance from your appliance you need to have your chimney swept regularly (At least once per year - more frequent for some appliances.)
If you live local to the Swansea area, Call Bryan John on 07867 567708 He will offer you friendly advice on this subject and reasonable rates for his hard to find skills.

Fire hazards
.
Avoid storing any flammable materials, especially kindling, fire lighters and newspaper too close to your fireplace.
In the event of a fire/chimney fire:
Call the fire brigade - 999. Close the air inlet control if available.
Move any combustible materials such as furniture away from the stove/fireplace and chimney breast.
If safe to do so, attempt to extinguish the fire.
Retreat to a safe are until Fire Brigade arrives - close doors on the way out of rooms.
